Throwing a theme party doesn't need to be difficult and frustrating. There are a number of different popular party themes. The Indy 500 is a very popular sporting event for many to watch. It is a great time for family and friends to get together and have a good time watching this event. Below are a few recipes to help get the party moving, as well as a few decorating tips.

Racetrack Reuben Ryes

Yield: 44 servings

Ingredients:

  • 10 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 loaf party rye bread (44 small squares)
  • 1 cup Thousand Island dressing
  • 1/2 pound smoked sausage, sliced in 1/4-inch pieces
  • 16 ounces sauerkraut, drained

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Cut cheese slices into 1/2-by 2 1/2-inch strips.
  3. Melt butter in a small pan, then brush rye bread with butter on both sides and place all the slices on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 5 minutes, turning bread slices after 2 1/2 minutes of cooking time.
  5. Remove the pan from the oven.
  6. Stack the ingredients on the bread slices to make Reubens: dressing, sausage, sauerkraut, cheese.
  7. Put into the oven for 5 more minutes to melt the cheese.

Zoom Zoom Vodka Vroom

Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounces vodka
  • 1 ounce Grand Marnier
  • 1 ounce cherry mix*
  • Crecked Ice
  • Orange juice
  • Cherries for garnish

*(To make a mix, dilute cherry concentrate with 1/3 the required amount of water.)

Directions:

  1. Shake vodka, Grand Marnier, and cherry mix with ice. Strain.
  2. Pour over ice into race-designed glasses and fill the rest of the glass with orange juice.
  3. Garnish with a cherry speared on a Grand Prix flag toothpick.

Speedy Spaghetti Pasta Salad

Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Salad Ingredients:

  • 1 pound cooked spaghetti
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 cucumber, chopped
  • 1 4-ounce can slice mushrooms

Dressing Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces Italian Dressing
  • Salad Supreme seasoning, to taste

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine cooked spaghetti with remaining salad ingredients.
  2. In a small bowl, mix dressing ingredients. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss well. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving.

Kwik Kahlua Bars

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 cup nuts, chopped
  • Coffee ice cream
  • Coffee liqueur
  • Whipped cream

Directions:

  1. Place butter in a glass bowl and microwave on high for 1 minute.
  2. Stir in sugar, salt, vanilla, coffee liqueur, and eggs.
  3. Add flour, cocoa, and nuts.
  4. Spread the mixture evenly into a greased 8-inch square microwave-safe dish.
  5. Microwave at 70 percent power for 4 minutes; rotate dish and microwave for 3 1/2 to 4 minutes more. The top should be dry, but not hard, when done.
  6. Cool and cut into squares.
  7. Top each square with a scoop of coffee ice cream and drizzle with coffee liqueur. Garnish with whipped cream.

Decorative Touches

  1. Use an All-American red, white, and blue color scheme.
  2. Create a backdrop for the buffet area with advertising art (available at auto supply stores).
  3. Include race track logos, flags, and event promotional posters.
  4. Cover all tables with black-and-white-checkered table clothes, theme serving ware, and paper products.
  5. Make two or three stacks of automobile tires and lay wooden planks across them to breate serving surfaces.
  6. Use black-and-white-checkered bandannas as napkins.
  7. Display toy race cars of all sizes.
  8. Use new, clean auto-parts packaging as snack containers.
